Some women believe that pregnancy can make it more silly because of declining IQ (Intelligence Quotient) or level of intelligence. True?

Most women who are pregnant never heard that pregnancy can make a reduction in IQ by 15 points. But do not worry, it’s a myth and there is no scientific evidence or research that can explain it. Pregnancy does make major changes in the body and emotions of women, such as increased stress, tired, frequent nausea, vomiting (morning sickness), mood swings and weight gain. But there is no scientific data linking between IQ levels and pregnancy.

Studies conducted by researchers from the University of Bradford and the University of Leeds in 2010 also found no decline in IQ in pregnant women. But the study found pregnant women so easily forgotten. Forgetfulness is due to hormonal changes during pregnancy is associated with certain regions of the brain called the hippocampus.

In addition because of hormones that affect the brain, forgetfulness of pregnant women also influenced the mood and increased levels of anxiety or concern that affect memory function of the pregnant mother. So the researchers assert is not true, pregnant women will experience a decline in IQ. Indeed in a study published in the Journal of Pediatrics in 2009, as reported by Reuters on Sunday (02/06/2011), shows morning sickness in pregnant women can increase the IQ of the fetus.

The study states that women who experience morning sickness tend to have children who are smarter than women who did not experience it in the early days of pregnancy. This is evident from studies that tested 121 Canadian children aged between 3 and 7 years. From the results of a particular IQ test, memory and language skills, children born to mothers who experience morning sickness during pregnancy appeared to have the highest score.

“The findings show that nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is not harmful and can even increase both the long-term effects on children,” explained lead researcher, Dr. Irena Nulman of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Dr Nulman says, reduces the clinical symptoms of morning sickness can improve quality of life for women during pregnancy, but it did not cause side effects, either the mother or the baby she is carrying. Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is very common, especially in the first trimester. This is related to changes in certain hormones necessary for development of the placenta, one theory is that morning sickness is a sign of a healthy pregnancy.
